A First-Generation American
Dr. Mitchell Sheinkop grew up in a working-class family where determination and hard work were fundamental values. His parents had escaped the turmoil of Eastern Europe between World War I and World War II, fleeing discrimination and poverty. Born in the United States, Mitchell and his brother marked a new beginning for the Sheinkop family in America.
“They saw higher education as the best means of assimilation and medicine as the pinnacle of achievement,” he shared.
Growing up in Chicago and instilled with Midwestern values, Sheinkop served as a first lieutenant and captain in the Medical Corps of the United States Air Force Reserve. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois, completed his medical training at Chicago Medical School, and finished with a residency at Northwestern University.
Considering His Journey
Dr. Mitchell Sheinkop reflects on a defining experience that significantly influenced his career.
“On the first day of my internship at the Chicago Cook County Hospital, we were assembled and advised to seek a Vietnam-era deferment via The Berry Plan,” Sheinkop recalled. “That allowed physicians to postpone obligatory military service until they had finished medical school and residency training.”
He reflects that his parents’ vision and relentless drive continue to inspire him. “If my parents hadn’t set sail when they did, things might not have worked out so well,” he noted.
Dr. Sheinkop attributes his achievements to his family’s courage and resolve. “Their bravery gave me the opportunity to pursue my dreams and make a difference in the field of medicine. Every step I’ve taken is a testament to their legacy.”
Now, living in Chicago with his wife of 56 years, Sharon, he and his spouse lead an active life, enjoying gardening and skiing. Their lifestyle highlights the importance of regenerative medicine in sustaining a vibrant quality of life.
Mitchell’s extensive career as a surgeon and visiting lecturer has taken him around the world, where he has delivered educational seminars in diverse countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Hungary, Switzerland, Poland, Russia, Romania, and Austria.
He has also made substantial scholarly contributions, authoring over 70 articles in prestigious publications and peer-reviewed journals, solidifying his standing as a leading expert in orthopedics and regenerative medicine.
Dr. Sheinkop reflected, “I am from a hardworking, blue-collar, Midwestern family. I attribute my success in medicine to a strong work ethic, a little luck, and not being afraid to seize opportunities. I went into orthopedics, for example, during the Vietnam era because I recognized the need for that specialty.”
